CBD Oil vs Copaiba Oil – How Do They Compare?

You may have seen advertisements by essential oil companies online calling Copaiba the “new CBD.” But is it really? In this article, we will discuss the differences and similarities between Copaiba oil and CBD oil.

What is CBD Oil?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of at least 113 chemical compounds known as cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. Hemp-derived CBD oil products are gaining popularity for their therapeutic benefits. You can purchase them online and locally since they contain less than 0.3% THC.

Full spectrum CBD oil contains an array of cannabinoids and terpenes from the source cannabis plant. Terpenes are naturally-occurring organic compounds found in almost all plants, flowers, vegetables and herbs.

Like cannabinoids, terpenes have many health benefits associated with them. The effects that you feel when consuming cannabis products can largely depend on the concentration of specific terpenes. Additionally, the scent and taste of CBD products is often influenced by its terpenes.

What is Copaiba Oil?

Copaiba oil is an essential oil that is extracted from the resin of the Copaiba tree. It’s commonly compared to black pepper oil. Copaiba oil contains terpenes but no CBD or any other cannabinoids commonly found in CBD oil.

Why are They Being Compared?

The comparisons of Copaiba oil to CBD oil are primarily being made by those who sell Copaiba oil. The popularity of CBD oil is far greater than Copaiba. So you should be aware that those selling Copaiba oil may be making comparisons to CBD oil as a marketing strategy.

The only valid comparison between the two is that they both typically contain the beta-caryophyllene (BCP) terpene. Unlike other terpenes, BCP can interact directly with the CB2 endocannabinoid receptors within the body. BCP is naturally-occurring in both cannabis and Copaiba tree resin.

Beta-Caryophyllene is thought to be an important terpene for reducing inflammation in the body. It is one of the most well-known terpenes and is believed to play an important part in relieving pain and reducing stress.

Is Copaiba Oil Truly Comparable to CBD Oil?

We don’t think so. While beta-caryophyllene is a beneficial terpene, there are many other cannabinoids and terpenes in whole-plant CBD oil besides just BCP. These multiple compounds play an important role in the synergistic effect and benefits of CBD oil, and BCP is just one actor in that play. Copaiba oil is not CBD oil and does not contain any CBD or any other cannabinoid.

Both products may have therapeutic benefits, but they are definitely not the same thing. Copaiba oil may be a useful essential oil, but you should not consider it to be a viable alternative or replacement to CBD oil.
