Can You Put CBD Oil in Your Belly Button?

Alternative ways of using CBD has been a hot topic of late. One of the most talked about alternative methods is the application of CBD into the belly button.

The concept itself isn’t new. It’s an ancient technique of getting medications or other treatments into the body. But does it really do anything or would you just be wasting money? Let’s discuss this method and whether it’s worth trying.

The Pechoti Method

The idea behind using the belly button as a delivery method is called the Pechoti Method. It is commonly used in Ayurveda traditions. The name is based on the idea that there is something called a “Pechoti gland” behind the belly button. This is thought to be a leftover from when the umbilical cord is cut after birth.

The belief is that since all nutrients pass through the umbilical cord as you are formed in the womb, it should still be able to be used as a way to get nutrients and medical treatments into the body.

Does the Pechoti Gland Even Exist?

So far, there has been no such gland discovered behind the belly button. But this isn’t the only problem with the Pechoti Method.

When applied topically to the skin, CBD needs additional permeability enhancers to penetrate through the top layers of the skin and enter the bloodstream. Most CBD oil products don’t have these enhancers that would make them transdermal.

So even if the Pechoti gland does exist, our current knowledge of CBD does not support the idea that it can pass through the skin to reach the gland. Most people using the Pechoti Method are applying traditional CBD oil drops that contain carrier oils such as hemp seed or coconut oil. None of these are permeability enhancers.

To penetrate through the skin, a transdermal product would be required. But if one were to use a truly transdermal product, applying it to the belly button would be unnecessary. Transdermals can get into the bloodstream no matter where they are applied to the body.

Summary – Can You Put CBD Oil in Your Belly Button?

The Pechoti Method is a trendy but controversial alternative way of taking CBD. The gland cited by its proponents has not been found to exist in the human body. But there are people who use this method and claim success. This is despite the contradicting knowledge that most popular CBD products lack the ability to penetrate through the skin.

The only true harm with trying this method is the potential waste of CBD and therefore waste of money. If you do decide to give it a try, we’d love to hear about your experiences in the comments section.

  1. I have Diverticulitis and am trying all legal avenues to get pain relief. I tried this and it did nothing but waste oil as the article says. Oral is how I will have to use because am not going the suppository route.
