Our Guide to the Strongest CBD Oils for 2020

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced user, it’s important to understand what strength, or potency, means when it comes to CBD oil tinctures. The strongest CBD oils do have their advantages. They are generally preferred by those who need higher doses of CBD for more chronic concerns. But stronger doesn’t always mean better for every person.

In this guide, we explain what CBD oil potency is and why it matters. This will help you make an informed decision about the strength that is right for you. We also identify the safe and reputable brands with the highest potency CBD oil tinctures..

What is CBD Oil Potency?

Potency is a measure of the concentration of CBD in the product. Specifically, potency is the amount of CBD in milligrams per milliliter of liquid in the bottle. One milliliter is approximately one dropperful and the suggested serving size listed on most tincture bottles.

CBD oil drops are considered high potency if they contain 50 milligrams of CBD per milliliter or more. Medium potency products contain 25-49 milligrams of CBD per milliliter. Low potency tinctures contain less than 25 milligrams of CBD per milliliter.

Many brands show the strength and other important numbers related to potency on the front label of the bottle. We’ve highlighted the labels for 3 popular brands in the picture below. Note that the labels show the total amount of CBD in the bottle, size of the bottle in milliters and potency in milligrams of CBD per milliliter.

If the potency isn’t listed on the label of your product, it’s easy to calculate yourself. Just divide the total milligrams of CBD in the bottle by the size of the bottle in milliliters. The majority of CBD tincture bottles contain 30 milliliters of liquid but they can range anywhere from 10 to 100 milliliters in most cases.

What are the Strongest CBD Oils?

The strongest CBD oil products are those with the highest potency or concentration of CBD in them. The strongest full spectrum CBD oils have at least 80 milligrams of CBD per milliliter or dropperful. This is generally regarded as the highest concentration possible from full spectrum hemp extract to produce the synergistic benefits of the entourage effect

Even higher potencies can be found with broad spectrum and isolate CBD tinctures. This is because they are made with a high concentration of pure CBD isolate rather than whole-plant hemp extract. The strongest broad spectrum and isolate tinctures can have over 100 milligrams of CBD per milliliter.

Why Does the Strength of CBD Oil Matter?

Knowing the strength of your product is important for dosing purposes. The higher the strength or potency, the less that you’ll need to take to achieve the same dosage.

Say for example that you want to take a 50 milligram dose of CBD. If the potency of your product is 17 mg/ml, you’d need to take 3 milliliters (dropperfuls) to get 50 milligrams But if the potency of your product is 83 mg/ml, you’d only need to take 0.6 milliliter or about a half of a dropperful to get the same amount of CBD.

What are the Advantages of Higher Potency CBD Oils?

Stronger CBD oils are a good option for users who are taking higher doses. The fact that you  can take much less of a higher potency product to achieve the same dosage is the main advantage. You’ll also usually save money over time since their price per milligram is typically lower.

  • Take fewer drops. When given the choice of taking multiple dropperfuls or a few drops to achieve the same CBD serving size, most users would choose the latter. It’s just easier and more convenient to take less. Especially since you should hold the drops under your tongue for at least 60 seconds for maximum absorption. If you dislike the taste of CBD tinctures, the option to take less becomes even more attractive.
  • Your bottle will last longer. If you’re taking 50 milligrams of CBD oil per day, a bottle with 500 milligrams will only last for 10 days. But it will take you 50 days to use up a bottle with 2500 milligrams. So you won’t have to reorder as often with a higher potency product.
  • Save money. Bottles of higher potency CBD oil cost more than their lower potency counterparts. But the price per milligram is almost always lower. So you’ll save money over time. For example, a 2500 mg bottle may cost $130 ($0.05 per milligram) while a 1000 mg bottle from the same brand costs $60 ($0.06 per milligram). The lower cost per milligram can add up to big savings if you take CBD regularly.

Does Stronger Mean Better?

Many new users assume that the stronger a CBD oil is, the better it must be in terms of effectiveness. But this really isn’t the case. Effectiveness is based more on finding your optimal dosage in milligrams of CBD that works best for you.

So when it comes to success with CBD, it’s usually less about the potency itself and more about the amount of CBD that you are taking. By using a higher strength tincture, you can take less to get the same amount of CBD. But higher potency alone won’t make it more effective in most cases. The most important thing is finding a product type and brand that works gives you the benefits you are looking for.

Which Strength Should You Choose?

The “right” choice of strength is based on how many milligrams of CBD that you’ll be taking per day. If you’ll be taking higher amounts (50 milligrams or more per day), then it’s worth considering a higher potency product. For those taking lower doses, lower potency tinctures can still be an effective option.

If you’re new to CBD, you probably don’t need to jump to the strongest CBD oils right away. We recommend starting with a lower potency product from the brand of your choice. This is a more affordable way to try the product and see if it works well for you. If it does, you can always switch to a higher potency option for your next purchase depending on what you find to be your optimal dosage.
